We've sharpened our pencils, packed our bug spray, and maybe a survival kit (just in case the s'mores get a little too toasted). The Horror Writers Association (HWA) is thrilled to announce a terrifyingly perfect collaboration: we are officially joining forces with Creepaway Camp as a Community Partner for their highly anticipated 2026 event!
What is Creepaway Camp?
For those who haven't yet heard the ghostly whispers, Creepaway Camp is a unique, five day, four night horror convention held at a Colorado summer camp facility. Imagine the joy of summer camp—bonfires, cabins, games—but with a heavy dose of the macabre, featuring incredible guests, workshops, themed activities, and a community of horror lovers. It's truly a one-of-a-kind, immersive experience for fans and creators alike.
Creepaway Camp 2026 will be held from June 29 - July 3, 2026, at La Foret Conference and Retreat Center near Colorado Springs, CO.
Why This Partnership is a Match Made in Heaven — or Maybe A Bit Further South
The Horror Writers Association is dedicated to supporting creative interests that promote the horror writing genre. Creepaway Camp offers a living, breathing, slasher-film-ready environment where that love for horror comes to life. As an "Accomplice," the HWA will be directly involved in enhancing the literary and creative aspects of the event.
“The Horror Writers Association’s mission is to foster public interest in the horror writing genre and it is our hope that by investing in these partnerships we can better serve and support our members as well as the horror community at large,” said Maxwell I. Gold, Executive Director of the HWA.
"HWA Libraries engages communities with the horror genre through library collections and programs to create vibrant, thriving, and collaborative horror spaces. Central to this is the HWA’s summer reading initiative, Summer Scares, which provides an annual list of selected titles of Adult, Young Adult, and Middle Grade books and provides resources that foster library/author partnerships to bring horror to more people throughout the year," said Konrad Stump, HWA Libraries Co-Chair.
Expect to see:
✍️HWA-Sponsored Panels & Programming: Focused on the craft of horror writing, publishing, and the history of the genre.
📚Author Spotlights: Featuring talented HWA members as special guests, workshop leaders, and perhaps even campfire storytellers!
💡 Networking Opportunities: Providing a platform for emerging and established writers to connect with industry professionals in a fun, informal setting.
"We are absolutely thrilled to team up with the HWA," said the Creepaway Camp team. "Their mission to support horror writers aligns perfectly with our goal of creating a truly immersive and terrifyingly fun experience. The HWA’s expertise will bring a sharp, creative edge to our programming."
